in a day where gorgeous, swoon-producing wedding & event design is everywhere, and seems more accessible than ever, where even a DIY approach can yield magazine-quality results, it is easy to get caught up in design enthusiasm.
and i love it when it's done in a way that seems effortless, in a way where the design does not seem superimposed upon the event, but rather, seems to be rising up from within it, as a perfect expression -- and elevation -- of each individual element (the location, the flowers, the layout, the colors, the graphics, the everything).
but often i see events that are over-designed and heavy-handed. it seems that the elements are not a natural fit for the environment, there is no subtlety or nuance, and individual design elements get lost in a big conglomeration of DESIGN FLUFF, rather than allowing each element to sing it's own unique note in a beautifully harmonized aesthetic. not to mention that great design is practical, too. form + function = good design, and all that.
so it was incredibly refreshing that my AWESOME CLIENTS (more about them in the full post to come, but seriously, loved them! love you matt + kara if you are reading this!) did not over-design, which allowed their beautiful location to sing it's lovesong in all it's glory. granted, they got married in a very inspired location in beautiful carmel. check it out here (and i do just want to note that if you check out the website, go

wanger whose work is always inspired and inspiring). matt + kara said 'i do' under a blanket of fog and trees. no archway of flowers or anything -- just them, the trees, their family and friends, and a sprinkling of flower petals by the flower girls...
so beautiful and sophisticated in it's simplicity!
this was really a great wedding to be a part of, wonderful textures and the cool of fall, awesome couple, great guests, amazing carmel location, and i got to work it with my awesome hubby!
